얼마전에 처음으로 TOEFL IBT 시험을 봤는데, 시험장 정말 엉망이더군요 ㅠ.ㅠ
리딩 & 리스닝 하고 나서 관두고 나올까란 생각이 여러번 들었는데 돈($150)이 아까워서 참았습니다.

적어도 칸막이 정도는 있을거라 상상했는데, 긴 책상에 4명씩 앞뒤로 앉아서 lenovo 렙탑가지고 시험 봤습니다. 스피킹 시간엔 정말 가관이더군요. 50~60명 정도가 블라블라 하는데 무슨 시장에 나온줄 알았습니다.

리딩 첫번째 문제를 풀때는 미리 지문을 한번 쭉 읽고나서 문제를 풀었는데 20분에 겨우 맞춰서 풀었습니다.
첫번째 문제를 풀고나니 미리 지문을 읽는게 그다지 효율적이지 않다는 생각이 들어서, 나머지 두번째, 세번째 문제는 문제 풀면서 지문을 읽었는데 생각외로 점수가 잘 나왔네요. (찍기의 달인…)

High (22-30)

Test takers who receive a score at the HIGH level, as you did, typically understand academic texts in English that require a wide range of reading abilities regardless of the difficulty of the texts. Test takers who score at the HIGH level, typically have a very good command of academic vocabulary and grammatical structure; can understand and connect information, make appropriate inferences, and synthesize ideas, even when the text is conceptually dense and the language is complex; can recognize the expository organization of a text and the role that specific information serves within the larger text, even when the text is conceptually dense; and can abstract major ideas from a text, even when the text is conceptually dense and contains complex language.

오늘 어디선가 아래와 같은 글을 보게 되었는데..

A topic that is hotly debated among test taking circles is whether or not you should read the reading passages before you read the question. One theory is that you can save time if you read the questions first and then go back and read over the passage. Another theory is that you should read the passage first and then go into the questions. Both theories have their own individual merit and due to the differences in ability and preferences among test takers, one method may work better than another for you.

Our recommended theory is the flyover. You want to spend some time on the passage, at a bare minimum so that you have a general idea about what the questions are going to ask and get your mind into the proper mindset for the series of questions. However, you don’t want to waste too much time on reading the passage, because much of the detail will be forgotten by the time you get to the questions anyway. Therefore, you should fly over the passage. You should read it very quickly for a high-level overview (hence the flyover) understanding of what is contained in the passage.

위에서 언급한 바는 사람에 따라 틀리긴 하겠지만 한번 훑어보기를 권장합니다.
만약에 지문의 길이가 짧다면 저 역시 훑어보기를 선호하지만, 토플의 리딩 지문은 상당히 길고 한번 읽는다고 해서 그다지 머리속에 잘 들어오지도 않더군요.
(처음 본 시험인지라 긴장해서 그렇기도 하겠지만)
긴 지문을 미리 읽는 것보다는 풀 수 있는 문제를 풀고 나서 맨뒤에 나오는 요약하는 문제를 풀 때 남은 시간을 활용하여 지문을 읽는게 토플 시험에 있어서는 좀 더 좋은 방법인거 같습니다.
